New Audi A4 Cabriolet arrives

1 July 2002: The new open top Audi A4 Cabriolet has just been launched in Ireland. The range consists of two models initially - a 3.0 litre 220 bhp V6 at 59,590 euros and a 2.4 litre 170 bhp V6 at 52,540 euros. Both come with 5-speed manual transmission with Audi’s unique Multitronic system available as an option at 2,820 euros. Arriving later for the 2003 market will be a 2.5-litre TDI and a 1.8-litre Turbo for which prices will be announced at the time.

The original Audi 80-based Cabriolet was launched in 1991 and produced until 2000. The new car's arrival into Ireland comes as Audi’s fortunes are riding high with victories in the recent Le Mans 24-hour endurance race and record high sales figures showing Audi as the best performing brand in the luxury segment in Ireland.

In design terms, the A4 Cabriolet features a mix of A4 and TT influences. A subtle wedge shape and powerfully contoured tail combine with a chrome surround double radiator grille, aluminium waistline strip, bold wheel arches and brushed aluminium windscreen frame to underline its Audi pedigree. Round air vents with aluminium trim rings and a striking centre console add to its sporty appearance.

The A4 Cabriolet is described by Audi Sales Manager John Hayes as ‘an important niche model’ attractive to that segment of the market drawn to luxury open top motoring. "Like the A4 Saloon and Avant, we expect the Cabriolet to become the top selling model in its segment," he said.

Inside its 4.57 metres long x 1.77 metres wide body is a full-size four seater. The car has a longer wheelbase and extra knee/shoulder room mean more space for passengers than was the case with its predecessor. Luggage space is 315 litres (hood up) and 246 litres (hood down).

The electro-hydraulically operated triple layer hood with heated glass rear window which comes as standard, opens and closes at the touch of a button. It can be folded away into a flush closing storage compartment behind the rear seats all within barely 30 seconds.

Standard specifications include climate control air conditioning, heat insulating glass, variable height front seats, four electric windows, remote central locking and 16 inch alloy wheels. An extensive optional extras package is available. Rated 4-stars in Euro NCAP tests, its safety features include an active roll-over protection system, ESP electronic stability program, ABS, hydraulic brake assist, EDL electronic differential lock, ASR anti slip regulation, full-size front/side airbags, belt tensioners and belt force limiters for all seats.
