23 April 2001: The Order of Malta in County Kildare will shortly be taking delivery of three new all-terrain emergency ambulances which have been converted from new Isuzu Troopers.
The vehicles, worth around £30,000 each, are being converted by Newbridge Isuzu dealer Ray OBrien. The work involves taking out one of the rear seats and creating a space long enough to hold a stretcher with a patient on board, who can be tended to in transit by an Order of Malta paramedic sitting in the other rear seat.
The Trooper makes an ideal vehicle for the work of the Order of Malta, says Ray, who is also the local dealer for Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles. The order provides medical cover at a range of outdoor events throughout the county, particularly at race meetings and football matches, and is much more suitable than an ordinary van-based ambulance for difficult overland conditions.
