A6 a good executive decision

November 2000

Buying an Audi A6 1.8T Quattro is one executive decision I would love to be in a position to make. Convincing the wife is another thing.

With its fantastic looks, first class fit and finish and exquisite interior, the A6 exudes style and quality and is one of the best looking executive saloons on the market.

Audi recently increased its standard spec across the range on all four and six-cylinder models with electronic climate control air conditioning, walnut wood inlay on dashboard and door trims, 16-inch alloy wheels, extended service interval indicator positioned within a new instrument cluster, and a factory fitted CD/radio/cassette with boot mounted six-disc CD player.

Additionally, six-cylinder models also have leather steering wheel, front centre armrest, and an on-board computer.

There are also better value automatic and ‘Tiptronic’ transmission options, plus a Quattro package that came with our test car, the 1.8 petrol Turbo.

Bold and visually strong with decent dynamics, the A6 is of substantial build with a tank-like feel. The well equipped cabin boasts acres of space with class-leading legroom, kneeroom, shoulder width and headroom. The fascia is tastefully finished and functional with large, clear instruments and ease of use controls.

Seats are comfortable, like soft but supportive armchairs and offer lounge-type comfort. And rear space is very generous with ample room to carry three adults sitting abreast. The well-shaped driver’s seat is electrically adjustable and with the steering wheel also adjustable for both rake and reach, they combine to provide a comfortable driving position.

There are decent storage areas with lidded door bins and the large boot has a wide opening for easy loading.

And there is a choice of three distinct décor lines, Advance, Ambition and Ambiente at no extra cost.

Standard equipment includes ABS, Electronic Differential Lock, front and side airbags, central locking with remote control, front and rear electric windows, fog lights etc.

POWER: Powering my four wheel drive Quattro test car was the 150bhp 20-valve four-cylinder turbo-powered 1.8 litre petrol unit. With its strong mid-range urge and widespread pulling power, progress is rapid. It hits 60mph in a little over nine seconds en route to top speed of 133mph. Fuel wise I averaged 33.4mpg. A nice, smooth and refined highway cruiser.
