First Quattro diesel joins Audi A3 range

29 November 2001: The new Audi A3 1.9 TDI quattro, combines for the first time in an A3 diesel power and quattro permanent four-wheel-drive.

Power is provided by the 1.9-litre, four-cylinder TDI engine, featuring a completely new cylinder head with new pump-jet injection technology. It develops 130bhp, and peak torque at just 1900 rpm. With a 6-speed manual gearbox it powers the A3 1.9 TDI quattro to 62mph in 9.1 seconds and on to a maximum speed of 126mph.

The A3 1.9 TDI quattro can cover up to 57.7 miles per gallon (extra urban cycle).

Meanwhile, the Audi S3 quattro has been boosted by a more powerful version of its original 1.8-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It now delivers 225bhp, up from its original 210bhp, and can accelerate from rest to 62mph in 6.6 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 151mph, yet can return a maximum of 30.4 miles per gallon on the combined cycle.
