BMW X5s recalled

01 February 2003: BMW has recalled 164,000 of its X5 SUVs worldwide due to a fault with the brake hose. The move is expected to cost the company up to E5 million.

The brake hose in some of the cars could come loose over the front axle which could lead to damage and a loss of brake fluid in extreme cases. The recall affects cars built between August 1999 and April 2002.

BMW has delivered close to 240,000 of the cars to customers worldwide, and the model has been responsible for much of the growth in the US market.

BMW says it is not aware of any accidents linked to the fault.
