06 November 2002: Bosch has just delivered its 10 millionth Common-Rail diesel injection system, further demonstrating the increasing popularity of diesel engines.
Bosch is the worlds leading supplier of diesel injection systems and began marketing its accumulator (or rail) fuel injection units in 1997. Alfa-Romeo and Mercedes-Benz were the first car makers to use this high-pressure diesel injection system. Today, the majority of European vehicle manufacturers have a Common Rail engine in their line-up and cars, vans, and light and medium duty trucks are all using the system.
The speed of recognition of Common Rail is demonstrated by Boschs supply statistics: In 1998, Bosch sold 200,000 Common Rail systems and by the end of 1999, annual production exceeded a million units. Since then, Bosch has had to increase production by about a million systems a year to meet demand and this year, the number is expected to exceed four million.
