AA highlights cost of running family car

26 June 2002: The cost of running a family car has risen by 10% in a year, according the the latest survey by the AA.

A small family car now costs 10,196 euros a year to run, an increase of 979.60 euros on last year.

The main culprit is insurance, with premium increases of 25 percent and more in some categories. Parking charges, parts and servicing costs have also risen.

Petrol prices are at around the same level as they were a year ago.

The AA calculates the total cost of motoring based on an annual mileage of 10,000. The cost per mile for a small car, 1251cc-1500cc is now estimated at 101.96 cents, against 90.9 cents this time last year.
