Car tax take 'not fair'

09 August 2004: The total Government total tax take adds 70% to the pre-tax price of the average family car, according to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, which adds that the billions in motor related taxes paid by Irish motorists in recent years represents far more than than their fair share.

Although ooverall car registrations for the year are up by 7.22%, the organisation says that the fall in July does cause 'grave concerns' that VRT continues to put pressure on the motorist and is an area that the Government must begin tackle immediately.

Statistics for July 2004 show that total passenger car registrations for the month were 12, 443 (-5.8% on the same period last year.) Year to date statistics (to end July 2004) show passenger car registrations at 134,017 (+7.22% on the same period last year).
