Citroen pulls a double as UK towcars

28 September 2001: Citroën’s HDi common rail diesel engine technology swept the marque to victory in two classes at this year’s Caravan Club Towcar of the Year Awards in the UK, with both the Xsara and the new C5 taking wins.

The 110 HP 2.0 litre HDi diesel-engined Citroën Xsara LX triumphed in the high value sub Stg£13,500 class, receiving praise for its high torque engine, which 'made for a very relaxing tow, together with its fine handling capabilities', according to the citation.

Citroën totally dominated the £16,501 to £20,000 class, with the C5 taking both first and second places. The 2.0 litre HDi LX Estate just pipped the 2.2 litre HDi SX saloon for top honours 'thanks to its towing-friendly suspension'.

The Caravan Club’s magazine said "This competition proved beyond doubt that Citroën has a great towcar in the C5. The HDi LX Estate is a cracking performer in all respects: stability, power, braking and practicality. On the open road it soaks up the bumps and keeps your caravan on the straight and level, whilst the extra power of the 2.2 litre HDi engine gives good performance on the hills." TW
