Cyclists rebuke National Safety Council

18 May 2004: The Irish Cycling Campaign has accused the National Safety Council of trying to get cyclists off Irish roads altogether.

This is a similar line to that taken recently by the Galway Cycling Campaign, which accused the NSC of using similar tactics as those used by the National Socialist Party in Germany between the wars.

It comes in the wake of a call by the NSC that cycling helmets be made mandatory in this country, and also a recommendation that children under 12 should not be allowed to cycle to school.

The ICC says when such measures were introduced in other countries it led to a drastic drop in levels of cycling.
