Eyes open for the dark drive

15 October 2003: RAC School of Motoring has issued a warning to older drivers about the extra demands that the darker autumn and winter mornings and evenings may make on them.

Eyesight can deteriorate quite quickly in middle age and, while the effects of that deterioration may be less obvious to them in bright summer conditions, the onset of autumn can cause real problems for drivers with less than perfect vision.

RAC School of Motoring reminds people in their 50s and over to have regular eye checks, to wear their glasses every time they get in the car, to plan plenty of stops into any long journeys, as ageing lessens the ability to concentrate over long periods, and to investigate the possibilities of using extra wide internal mirrors and blind-spot external mirrors.
