East Europe car sales boom

15 April 2004: Car sales in Eastern European countries like Poland are booming in the last couple of months because imminent entry to the EU will mean more expensive cars.

Clearer definitions of commercial vehicles and the recovery of VAT is also accelerating sales.

In the first three months of the year, Polish cars sales are up by a fifth, as are those in Slovenia. Conversely, with VAT rates set to drop in the Czech Republic with accession on May 1, sales there have been sluggish.
