16 January 2002: An EU proposal on compulsory eye tests for drivers would have all drivers over 45 required to have the tests every 10 years.
The suggestion is against a background of eye defects noticably increasing above that age. According to the AA, 86% of drivers would support the move.
The research suggests that three-quarters of over-45s surveyed admitted their eyesight had deteriorated, but because it is a gradual process, many didn't pay much attention to the fact.
But a 'significant' minority are too vain to want to wear their glasses behind the wheel. An AA spokesman said they should realise it is much more embarrassing to crash your car because you can't see properly.
