Fiat restructuring idea boosted

28 January 2003: The future of Fiat Auto got a boost from one of its creditor banks today when the financial organisation's CEO suggested a 'spin-off' and a recapitalisation of the division would be a good thing.

Banca Intesa Chief Executive Corrado Passera said a recapitalisation of E5 billion would also simplify Fiat's relationship with General Motors Corp GM.N , which already owns 20 percent of the car unit, and make it easier for possible new financial partners of Fiat to choose where to invest their cash.

Fiat has been struggling financially, despite having an acknowledged strong mid-range car in the current Stilo that simply hasn't achieved its potential because of the financial concerns surrounding the company.
