Fiat to boost commercials plant

12 February 2003: Fiat is to invest more than E400 million in retooling its Val de Sangro plant in central Italy to produce a new line of light commercial vehicles jointly developed with PSA Peugeot-Citroen.

Fiat will install new machines to stamp and install metal panels on its new line of Ducato vans due out in 2006.

Last month, Fiat and Peugeot said they will invest E1.7 billion in joint production of two new commercial-vehicle ranges, extending an existing partnership to 2017. Fiat supplied half the trucks and vans sold to businesses in Italy in December.

Fiat's auto unit lost about E1.3 billion last year, but commercial-vehicle sales surged 45 percent to 15,590 units, well ahead of the 32 per cent increase in the overall commercial market for the month.

Fiat and Peugeot will introduce new vehicles in 2006 to replace Fiat's existing Ducato and Scudo models and Peugeot's Boxer and Expert.
