21 March 2002: Ford researchers have developed a new pop-up bonnet which they say will save the lives of pedestrians who are knocked over. The bonnet lifts off the engine in an accident, softening the impact on the victim.
The bonnet uses sensor technology to recognise when the car is involved in an accident. It was designed by engineers at the company's research centre in Aachen, Germany and has been installed in a demonstration Focus and tested with crash dummies.
Other devices to improve safety are bumpers installed with layers of foam to reduce damage to pedestrians' legs, and a so-called 'under tray' to stop them being dragged under the car when they're knocked over.
A Ford spokesman says the equipment could be installed as standard within five years, but will initially be installed as extras.
