Ford aims to lead lights with LEDs

24 January 2002: Ford is experimenting with clustering groups of LEDs (light-emitting diodes) to produce enough light to make them useful in headlamps.

LED headlamps would produce less glare to oncoming drivers because each LED in the cluster could be precisely aimed. LED lights will be demonstrated on one of the Ford concept cars on display in the Detroit Motor Show in low beam and fog lamps, all of the signal lights, rear combination lamps, the center high-mounted stop light, front turn signals and marker lights.

Several carmakers already use LED's for indicator signals, taillights and brake lights, but not in headlamps.
