Ford-backed convoy raises charity money

18 October 2002: Convoy 2002, a vintage car rally which recently completed a tour of Ireland, has raised over E15,500 for St Luke's Home for Alzheimer's sufferers in Cork. Pictured presenting the cheque Eddie Nolan, former chairman & managing director of Henry Ford & Son Ltd; Sam Roberts, vice-chairman, editor and archivist of Ford Model Y & C Register; John Fitzgerald, Irish co-ordinator of Convoy 2002; Rt Hon. Bishop P Colton, Bishop of Cork, Cloyne & Ross and President of St Luke's Home for Alzheimer's sufferers, Cork.

Supported by Henry Ford & Son Ltd, the proceeds from the rally went to the Cork based charity because of the Ford family's links with the city. Forty-five vintage cars participated in the convoy, including a number of cars from the UK, Holland and Belgium.

This was the first vintage car rally organised in Ireland by the UK-based Ford Model Y & C Register, the only organisation of its kind dedicated to ensuring the survival of the first small European Fords; the 8 HP Model Y manufactured between August 1932 and August 1937 and the 10 HP Deluxe Models C and CX manufactured between September 1934 and March 1937. The Ford Model Y & C Register estimates that 850 of these cars survive today and this organisation has members in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand.
