
24 May 2002: The Circuit of Munster Rally on the 2nd of June, will be the next round of the highly competitive 2002 Ford Ireland KA Rally Championship, with all fourteen Pirelli shod, Ford rockets, battling for the overall honours.
Local Limerick man and current Championship leader, Gerry Keyes has a slender fifteen point lead over Mark Kane (Tullamore), going into the third round of the 2002 series, with James Eivers only one point in arrears in third position overall. Kenneth Mulvaney (Sligo) who scored a non-finish on the last round is sure to feature in Munster having proved his pace on the opening round of the series. Mark Kane another new comer will also be aiming to remove Gerry Keyes from the winners podium having been narrowly defeated on the last round of the Championship
"These new guys are getting a lot quicker, I was lucky to win the last two rounds. The competition is very tough but it really motivates me. The Circuit of Munster is my home event and I hope it will bring me luck. My whole package is working very well at the moment, my navigator Christina and me, Pirelli tyres and my Ford KA, lets keep it that way, out in front" said current KA Championship leader, Gerry Keyes.
The Circuit of Munster Rally consists of 85 miles of the most demanding tarmac roads in County Limerick; the event will be a supreme test of both man and machine.
The 2002 Ford of Ireland Ford KA Rally Championship is the first, one make; manufacturer supported Championship in the history of Irish Rallying. Designed to promote young Irish rallying talent, the Championship is part of Ford's Ladder of Opportunity, that sees the Ford Motor Company providing young drivers with the introductory Ford KA Rally Car, then onto the Ford Focus 2.0 litre Kit Car Rally Championship, 1600 Puma Junior World Rally Car and eventually the Focus World Rally Car.
