Major makers join for fuel cell development

16 January 2003: Toyota, Nissan, DaimlerChrysler and Ford are leading a group of about 20 carmakers and and car parts manufacturers who have decided to work together on fuel cell development for automotive use.

The group will particularly aim to extend the distance fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) can run before refueling to around 500 km by increasing the fuel storage capacity of the cars.

Toyota and Honda launched the world's first FCVs simultaneously last month, but they can cover only about 300 km before refueling.

The group plan to develop fuel tanks which can hold 40 percent more high-pressure hydrogen than current fuel cells, by 2005.
