19 March 2003: GM and its joint venture partner in Russia, Avtovaz, have signed an agreement for the building of the Opel Astra in Russia.

Long expected, the car will be the second co-production - a version of the Autovaz Niva offroad vehicle is being manufactured under the Chevrolet banner.

The Togliatti plant began production last year and should reach capacity of 35,000 Chevrolet Nivas this year.

At full capacity it will produce 75,000 cars a year, up to 40,000 of which will be for export.

The new project will be partly financed by a $100 million Eurobond.
