12 February 2004: A new GM Daewoo small SUV will make its appearance in Europe later this year, based on the new Avtovaz/GM joint venture Niva 4WD being produced at the Togliatti Lada plant.
GM has built a brand new manufacturing plant at the Avtovaz facility for the Niva, which uses technologies underpinning the Saturn Mule sold in the USA.
According to GM Daewoo Europe sources, the new Daewoo SUV will have full offroad capability. It will also be the first Daewoo to get the new diesel engine under development by GM Daewoo, an engine badly needed for the range of the company's products sold in Europe.
The lack of a diesel engine for Daewoo since it was bought by GM is because there was no diesel programme in the old company, as diesels were not encouraged by the Korean government.
Subsequent to the SUV, the diesel engine will also be made available for the Nubira range.
