27 June 2002: The Volkswagen Golf has surpassed the Beetle as the most produced car in Volkswagen history.
On Tuesday last, the 21,517,415th Golf rolled off the assembly line at the company's headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany.
Now in its fourth generation, the Golf became market leader in Germany in 1975 - one year after production began. Since 1985, it has been the top-selling car in Western Europe.
Since the start of production in March 1974, the Golf has taken just 28 years to reach this production figure - a milestone which the Beetle (which is still being built in Mexico) took 56 years to reach.
