23 October 2002: Irish motorists can now own a cost-effective in-car GPS (Global Positioning System) navigation system, complete with the road map of Ireland.
Cork Based CharterNav GPS Ltd's Navman GPS receiver and combined software enables the motorist to navigate around Ireland - as well as an additional 13 European countries.
The user can access worthwhile information such as; turn-by-turn instructions, calculate the most suitable routes between locations and display current position on a background map.
The Navman GPS is like a jacket that clips onto a palm PC. If you already own a PDA, otherwise known as a palm PC device, then it is possible that you are half way to owning an in-car navigation system. Existing owners of a PDA (personal digital assistant) such as the Compaq iPAQ, Palm, or the Casio, can add the Navman GPS receiver and software to provide a solution for their navigation needs.
The Navman also comes complete with a windscreen bracket mount and a cigarette lighter vehicle power cable. For those without a personal palm PC then it is possible to purchase the complete package.
