'Graduated' licences could cut accidents

24 July 2003: Canadian research results indicate that a graduated driving licence system could improve accident rates among novice drivers, by allowing them gain experience in more 'forgiving' environments.

The research in Ottawa looked specifically at accident rates among young people, and found that the rates of incident decrease rapidly in the first six months of driving.

Young drivers have crash rates that far exceed those of older, experienced drivers, but even among teenagers there are age-related differences, the investigators found. Crash rates decline consistently and dramatically with each yearly increase in age.
