UK may colour-code cars for 'greenness'

22 March 2002: Cars in the UK could soon carry colour code labels showing buyers just how 'green' their new vehicle is.

Under Government proposals, the labels would be based on a car's carbon dioxide emission levels and could also be affixed to some used cars up for sale.

A red label would indicate the least environmentally-friendly vehicle. The other colours would be blue, purple and green.

The plan is being put out for consultation ahead of a 12-month pilot scheme to start later this year.
