HGV safety initiative

17 July 2004: The National Safety Council, the Irish Road Haulage Association and the National Council on Ageing and Older People has launched a road safety campaign targeting goods vehicle drivers and vulnerable road users, especially older pedestrians.

According to the National Safety Council crossing the road in the blind spot in front of a goods vehicle may have been a contributory factor in the deaths of up to six elderly pedestrians in 2003.

The campaign aims to highlight the existence of the ‘DANGER ZONE’ around goods vehicles and prevent further loss of life.
