Honda Tourer launched in Ireland

25 June 2003: Honda's Accord wagon for its seventh generation of the nameplate is now on sale in Ireland, named the Accord Tourer. Pictured at the launch are Universal Honda's Frank Kennedy and Peter Cullen.

The car comes with the same 2- and 2.4-litre power as in the saloon version launched earlier this year. It comes in Executive specification in both versions, at E39,533 and E43,169 respectively. Each has automatic transmission as an option for an extra E1,500.

Among the features of the Tourer is a power tailgate that can be fully opened and closed at the press of a button. There's also a ‘one-motion’ rear seat, which can be folded flat to open up the luggage area in a simple one-handed operation.

The Tourer’s wheelbase and overall length is stretched by 50 and 85 mm respectively, compared with the Accord saloon. It also has its own very compact multi-link suspension. Honda claims a class-leading load volume of 576 litres with all seats in place, rising to 921 litres with the rear seats folded.

Safety considerations include pedestrian-protection features as well as front and side airbags, pre-tensioners in the front and three point seat-belts, head restraints in the front and rear, and controls which are mounted on the steering wheel.

The Executive specification incudes alloy wheels, electric tilt and slide sunroof, dual zone climate control, outside temperature indicator, 6-speaker CD audio systems and blackout 3D dashboard illumination as well as an alarm system and tonneau cover. All cars carry Honda’s 3-year/60,000 miles warranty and 3-year RAC roadside assistance.

Other versions will be added, Universal Honda's sales and marketing director, Frank Kennedy, said at the Irish launch. These are expected to become available in 2004, including a diesel.

He noted that more than 200 Accord saloons have been registered since the car was launched in March.

"This new Tourer will give the driving public further choices," he said. "It too will be aimed at the more discerning executive end of the market. While the overall sales of the Tourer are not expected to exceed 50 in a year, we feel that it offers serious competition to those marques already in that market. The car’s engine technology, attractive good looks and high specification will ensure its success."
