Holiday safety tips from the experts

16 June 2004: The Institute of Advanced Motorists has published guidelines to ensure holiday driving will be easier and safer.

Checking Petrol, Oil, Water (Water Bottle, Radiator & Battery), Electrics (lights, ventilation system, horn etc), and Rubber (tyres & wiper blades) should be a daily exercise.

If all your luggage doesn’t go in the boot, use a properly fitted roof rack.

Find somewhere safe, legal and convenient to stop to take a break with some exercise at least every two hours.

Plan your route before you set off and get someone else to do the map reading for you.

If you can, travel during off-peak times. Always be careful and courteous.
