Hauliers want speed limit increase

23 May 2003: The Irish Road Hauliers Association wants the national speed limit of 50mph for large trucks to be increased to 55mph.

IRHA spokesman Jimmy Quinn says the limiter installed on lorries over 7 tonnes is set at 55mph, and increasing the limit to this speed would prevent drivers from inadvertantly breaking the law.

He was commenting on an National Roads Authority report that found high levels of speeding amongst lorry drivers. Mr Quinn said the majority of hauliers complied with speed limits.
