Jeep Treo concept at Tokyo Motor Show

17 October 2003: Looking like a Smart car on steroids, the Jeep Treo concept to be shown at the Tokyo Motor Show next week is aimed at bringing the wilderness brand right into the city.

The ‘urban mobility vehicle’ Treo has an electric powertrain using an electric motor on each axle, and is designed to take advantage of future zero-emission fuel cell technology.

It provides space for two or three people, with an option for a pair to carry their leisure gear out into the parkland in a tough but stylish manner.

In a similar way to GM’s fuel cell prototype Hi-wire, the Treo’s driving controls are mounted on a rail that makes it easy to adapt the vehicle to right- or left-hand-drive.

There’s much use of high-tech materials, including a carbon-fibre frame for the seats.
