30 December 2003: Mercedes-Benz has developed a new six-cylinder 3.5-litre power unit which will be used first in future SLK models.
The engine outputs 272 hp and pulls 350 Nm of torque which is available from 2500 rpm and remains constant over a wide engine speed range up to 5000 rpm.
For the first time in a V6 engine it has variable intake and exhaust camshaft adjustment, which increases the output and torque while contributing to fuel economy.
A two-stage intake manifold, tumble flaps in the intake ducts and an intelligent heat management system are further technical highlights which bring exhaust emissions below the future EU 4 limits.
From spring 2004 Mercedes customers purchasing the SLK-Class will be able to experience the qualities of the new V6 engine for themselves.
