Microbus project revised

31 May 2004: The trendy reincarnation of the VW 'bus' of the 60s, the Miicrobus shown in concept form in 2001, has fallen victim to cost cuts.

The new 'bus' will now share Transporter V components and be aimed at a greater number of markets than the original idea that the US would represent the bulk of sales.

Production was due in 2006, but that has been put back a year while further cost-cutting measures are found.

The weak dollar has slashed VW profits expectations from the North American markets.
