| 14 May 2001: The 15th annual International Motorcaravan Festival and Trade Show organised by the Motorcaravan Club of Ireland will take place on the June holiday weekend at Ballinrobe Racecourse, Ballinrobe, Co Mayo, from Friday June 1 to Monday 4, 2001. This is the major event in the Irish motor caravan calendar and is the time when enthusiasts meet to discus their travel plans for the remainder of the year and to swap notes on camping destinations. It is also the time when many people plan to upgrade, downsize or buy their first motor caravan. Just about every type of motor home willbe present over the weekend from ultra luxurious American models to the smallest possible motorhomes, from the most modern to classic post war models. The trade show has grown into a mini motor show with distributors of motor caravans using the occasion to show off their new and used motor caravans. Three major factors have led to a huge increase in motor caravanning in this country, according to the Motorcaravan Club of Ireland President, Bill Lupton. These are the insurance deal operated by the club which has resulted in many having premiums for as low as £300 (EUR381) and the special vehicle designation which has reduced road tax from hundreds of pounds a year to £49 (EUR62.22). There is now an infrastructure offering support for the motorcaravanner with dealers specialising in the importing, sale and trading in of motor caravans. The Motorcaravan Club of Ireland offers a consultancy for those who want to build their own, advice for those who are buying new and used models as well as a specialist breakdown service. In addition, to increasing numbers of motor caravans there is a clear trend towards up market imported custom built motor homes, he says. The days when every motor home in the country was homebuilt are long gone, he said. Hundreds of motorcaravanners are set to descend on Ballinrobe over the June holiday weekend giving a much needed boost to tourism in the west.
