56mpg Corsa coming next year
18 August 2001: An Opel Corsa capable of 56.6mpg in normal driving will be shown at at the International Frankfurt Motor Show next month.
The Corsa ECO follows hot on the heels of the Astra ECO 4, which is proving popular in the UK and the rest of Europe.
A combination of modified aerodynamics and use of the Easytronic gearbox means fuel consumption on the combined cycle is 56.6 mpg, while a CO2 emissions figure of 120g/km matches the standards set by its diesel stablemate, the Astra ECO 4.
The Corsa ECO will be launched in Europe next spring.
The ECOTEC 1.0 litre 58PS engine is used in conjunction with Easytronic transmission, which for the Corsa ECO has been programmed so that the engine always runs in the lowest fuel consumption range. However in situations like overtaking, a kick-down function immediately releases the engine's full power.
The second factor contributing to the more than 10 per cent reduction in consumption and CO2 emissions compared with the Corsa 1.0, is aerodynamic fine tuning. Aero drag has been reduced from 0.32 to 0.29. The new figure has been achieved by using special panels for most of the underbody and the engine compartment, a roof spoiler, smooth wheel covers and reduced airflow through the engine compartment.
Other minor alterations also played an important role. For example, the Corsa ECO runs on 175/65 R14 tyres with optimised rolling resistance and recommended air pressures are increased to 2.7/2.5 bar (front/rear). Modifications to the springs and shock absorbers mean the body sits 15mm lower. A reduction in the idling speed also has a positive effect, particularly in urban traffic.
A full-size spare wheel, for example, is still included and air conditioning will be available as an option. Top speed of the new super mean Corsa is 100mph 4mph more than the standard manual Corsa 1.0. TW
