24 February 2003: Opel has put a new turbocharged engine into its Speedster, giving the 2-seater sports car a 0-62mph performance of 4.9 seconds.
The 2-litre engine outputs 200bhp, and its full torque potential is achieved at just a shade under 2000rpm.
The Speedsters double-wishbone suspension is based on proven auto racing design principles specially adapted by Opels engineers to handle the increased power of the Speedster Turbo (power-to-weight ratio: 4.7 kg/hp). The aerodynamics have been optimized with front and rear spoilers. A modified grille allows an improved airflow to the radiator, and the Speedster Turbo's side mounted gills have been modified in order to supply more air to the turbocharged engine.
Special 17-inch alloy wheels feature and new optional extras such as cross-drilled disc brakes are additionally available. There's also a new exhaust system.
Like the original Opel Speedster with its 147bhp 2.2 ECOTEC engine, the new high-performance model is produced by the English sports-car specialists, Lotus Cars.
