Older pedestrians more at risk - study

13 November 2002: Pedestrians over 65 are more than twice as much at risk of being involved in a crash with a motor vehicle if they use a marked crosswalk, compared to one with a signal or stop sign.

That’s the view of researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle, who compared more than 280 sites in six cities in Washington and California.

Motor vehicles struck and killed 4,739 pedestrians in the United States in the year 2000.
