Peugeot ups the power ante with new GTi

17 September 2002: Peugeot’s latest 206 GTi with a 180bhp engine will be premiered at the Paris Motor Show and has been inspired by the success of the 206 WRC which is dominating this year’s Championship series, and which has secured the manufacturers’ title for Peugeot for the last two seasons.

The 2- litre four cylinder petrol engine 180bhp and a 0-62 mph acceleration time of
7.1 seconds. It uses a VVT (variable valve timing) technology which ensures optimum engine torque can be delivered through a wide engine speed range.

The car will have 17" Atlantis alloy wheels, rear spoiler, full body-coloured exterior fittings (bumpers and side rubbing strips), and a new exhaust system finished with a twin chromed tailpipe.

It has modified front suspension geometry and stiffer springs, compared with the 206 current 138bhp GTi . It also features an electronic stability programme with the combined functions of traction control and directional control, which can be deactivated if required.

The interior includes racing-style sports seats and an instrument binnacle which houses black dials with chrome surrounds. Digital air conditioning with climate control, CD autochanger, automatic windscreen wipers with rain sensor, automatic ‘headlights on’, electrically retractable door mirrors, and luggage net in the boot are all part of the specification.
