Port Tunnel height proposal

18 June 2003: The Transport Umbrella Group has provided a suggestion to increase the clearance of the new Port Tunnel to the 5.05 metres required for so-called 'supercube' trucks.

The trucks are 18 inches higher than standard vehicles, and would not be able to use the tunnel in its current designed format because the height proposed is 4.65 metres.

An engineer hired by the TUG, Cormac Rabbit, says that by increasing the widths of the footpaths in the tunnels, the trucks would be forced to move into the centre of the roadway, and there's enough operating height then.

There's been strong criticism of the NRA for not designing the tunnell to take supercube vehicles which can carry up to twice the load of a standard articulated truck.
