Rage may not be just due to traffic frustration

26 November 2002: Road rage may not just be due to ther stresses of driving on crowded road systems, according to research conducted in Australia.

Following in-depth interviews with people living in Sydney, scientists at the Centre for Cultural Research into Risk at the Charles Stuart University in Bathurst found that pressures exerted by a competitive work environment and a general feeling that 'time is short' are also contributing factors.

The research showed that driving was a potent source of autonomy, pleasure and self-expression among motorists, meanings that were often frustrated by the travails of negotiating the road system.
