Diesel problem to decide 9-2 for Europe

30 December 2003: The difficulty of squeezing a diesel engine into the space traditionally occupied by a boxer-format Subaru petrol power unit may decide if the 'small' Saab AWD hatch 9-2x gets to Europe.

The 9-2x is designed to increase the model range of GM-owned Saab in the US, where the petrol engine would be the only required option.

Subaru's AWD technology and powertrain makke it cheap for GM to expand its Saab range, as it has a financial interest in Subaru also.

But the size of the vehicle could be attractive in Europe. If Subaru had a boxer-format diesel ...
