08 April 2003: General Motors is reported to be considering adding an SUV to the Saab range, which currently consists of just two cars.
The company has lost money in 10 of the last 12 years, and the move is seen as an attempt to boost sales in the division, whose marketing and development operations have recently been handed over to Opel.
The SUV may be a version of GM's trio of truck-like mid-sized SUVs - the Oldsmobile Bravada which is being phased out, the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and the GMC Envoy.
The Saab-badged vehicle would be built in the US and would be the brand's first vehicle made exclusively for the US market, its largest.
It could be called the Saab 9-8, a name registered by GM.
