Satellite road charging closer for UK

16 October 2003: The UK’s Transport Secretary Alistair Darling is expected to signal the imminent arrival of road charging by satellite when he addresses a conference in Edinburgh this week.

The pilot scheme will initially be used to charge trucks, but the same technology could be used for cars as a replacement for the current road tax system.

The satellite scheme would track motorists’ use of specific roads and charges would be applied according to distance travelled and the time of day or night.
