Slim seats a slow sell

10 June 2004: Slim format seats have been very common on concept cars for years, but no carmaker has yet tried to put the space-saving systems in real mass production cars.

That's because many in the industry believe the public isn't yet ready to believe that they are as comfortable as thick-wall seats.

But Stile Bertone's MD Roberto Piatti disagrees, saying that the public today may be more willing to understand and accept innovation.

He says that developing seats with the right 'H' point - the centre of the hip joint - is the most important thing. He suggests that many of today's cars simply don't have seats where this is ideal.

Unless the H point is optimum, a seat's occupant will never be compfrtable, regardless of the number of adjustments that can be made.
