25 January 2002: Skoda will be seriously attacking the upper end of the D segment car market in Ireland from July when it introduces its Superb large car, based on the floorpan of the VW Passat and Audi A6.
But Skoda claim that the Superb - a revival of a name last used some 60 years ago - has in fact the most spacious cabin in its class. This was borne out by an IrishCar.Com correspondent who described it last night as a limousine Passat that 'drives very well' after a first drive in Spain.

The interior of the car at its top levels oozes luxury, with leather and wood abounding. Interesting touches include a between-front seats large cubby which is connected to the air-conditioning system for keeping drinks chilled.
LEDs in the bottom of the exterior mirrors illuminate the ground outside the doors, and the car comes with bi-xenon headlights which give high-discharge illumination on both high and low beams.

In addition to the usual range of VW engines used by Skoda, the Superb will have a V6 2.8-litre option that outputs 193hp, returning the brand to the large-engine role it enjoyed in the 20s and 30s.
Safety features include four airbags, though it seems full curtain protection for all passengers isnt yet available.
Irish specification and price details arent yet available, though if the lead of the Fabia and Octavia models is followed, there will be a wide range of optional versions.
