22 April 2003: A camera-based monitoring system to stop drivers from falling asleep will be 'typical' in cars in 2-3 years, according to its developers, Iteris Inc in California.
The AutoVue Lane Departure System uses a tiny camera fixed on the windshield which focuses on lane markings on the road. If the car moves off lane, it emits a sound mimicing the 'rumble' strips sometimes used on the edges of motorways for the same purpose.
In the US it has been found that 45 per cent of all fatal accidents involve a vehicle moving out of its lane or off the road.
Daimler-Benz owns 10 per cent of Iteris and already offers the system on trucks in Europe at a cost of around 3,000 euros. When it becomes common on cars, it is expected to cost around 300 euros.
