Audi to break speed limit pact

24 March 2004: The voluntary agreement between European carmakers that their top speeds be limited to 250 km/h (155.8mph) is to be broken by Audi.

The electronic cutoff will be raised to 280 km/h on the Audi RS6 Plus, whose V8 engine engine output is to be raised from 450hp to 480hp.

The speed barrier of 250kph came into existence in 1987 with the introduction of BMW's V-12 750i.
