Subaru prototype diesels 'expensive'

08 October 2003: Subaru has developed prototype 4- and 6-cylinder diesel 'boxer' engines, but figures them to be too expensive for production.

According to the company's CEO, Kyoji Takenaka, a petrol-electric hybrid is a 'more interesting' prospect in meeting better fuel consumption requirements.

The company is also aiming to rebuild itself into a premium carmaker targeting the Audi and BMW elite segment.
