Subaru reveals next Legacy

31 May 2003: Subaru's next generation Legacy is set to arrive in Europe in the autumn. It will again be marketed in wagon and saloon form and will be powered by 2- and 2.5-litre engines. The 2-litre, most important in the Irish context, outputs 140hp.

The new car is significantly lighter than the current model, and Subaru claim that fuel economy - never the Legacy's strong point - is improved by around 20 per cent.

More than half of the planned 220,000 annual volume is expected to be sold in the US. In that market it is also likely to be offered in a special high performance version - the STi - with a 350hp twin-turbo derivative.

A 2-litre turbodiesel developed in conjunction with Isuzu will also be coming, a first for Subaru.

The Legacy wagon will arrive first.
