Drivers ignore suspensions

19 September 2002: Up to 75 percent of people whose driving licence is suspended in the US for driving while impaired (DWI) are likely to drive with no licence, according to a US study.

The investigation revealed that 32 of the 50 states had laws which allowed the impounding or immobilisation of cars owned by people who repeatedly flout their suspensions, but that they were seldom applied.

The study looked at such vehicle action programs in California, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Oregon, and Washington, and found that where the vehicle was denied to owners for 1-6 months, the incidence of subsequent offending decreased markedly.
